MABE’s Legislative Committee is scheduled to meet monthly through the 2012 legislative session. Major issues anticipated to come before the General Assembly include balancing the FY 2013 operating budget through revenue increases and/or cuts, including:
- proposals to shift teacher retirement costs to local governments
- restoring maintenance of effort as the local funding floor
- sustaining school construction funding at a high level
- the creation of a new tuition tax credit program within MSDE to finance student scholarships for private and parochial schools
In 2011, MABE monitored more than 350 bills pertaining to public education, which represents a significant portion of the more than 2,350 bills introduced. MABE advocates through written and oral testimony on many bills each session, vigorously promoting the interests of Maryland's 24 local boards of education and the 850,000 students we are educating to high standards of college and career readiness each day.
Through session, MABE will upload testimony as it is drafted in advance of bill hearings. In addition, we will post the up-to-date list of all bills we are tracking, provide our bill positions, and link to bill materials (bill text/fiscal note/bill status) and other pertinent documents and resources. The GreenSheet is MABE's online legislative newsletter and provides detailed synopses of many of the bills we are tracking and Calls to Action on priority legislation.
