  • Pandemic Planning Seminar held in Easton, 2-9-07

The Legal Services Association recently held a seminar in Easton in conjunction with the MABE Insurance Programs addressing pandemic planning. The program was constructed after a survey indicated that the majority of school systems were looking for assistance in grappling with a potential pandemic. Presentations were made by representatives of the Department of Health and Human Services, Baltimore County Public Schools, Howard County Health Department, Washington County Public Schools and Howard County Public Schools. Presentations were also made by Steve Bounds, Director of MABE's Legal and Policy Services Associations and John Magoon, Risk Management Officer of MABE's Insurance Fund and Pool. RISK MANAGEMENT

  • PRIMA Institute 2008 - An opportunity for Continuing Education -

The PRIMA Institute 2008 program has been announced. it will be held at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel on October 20-23 in San Antonio Texas. This is an excellent opportunity for those new to Risk Management, or for those pursuing their ARM or ARM-P designations. Visit www.primacentral.org or contact Catie Slye at cslye@primacentral.org for more information

  • CAR SEAT REQUIREMENTS FOR TRANSPORTING CHILDREN - Maryland's Child Passenger Safety Law -

Effective June 30, 2008, every child under 8 years of age must ride in a booster seat or other appropriate child safety seat unless the child is 4 feet, 9 inches or taller, or weights more than 65 pounds.

Every child from 8 to 16 years old who is not secured in a car seat must be secured with a vehicle seat belt. The back seat is the safest place for children under age 13.

Maryland Kids in Safety Seats can be contacted for further information at 1-800-370-SEAT or 410-767-6016.  They also maintain a website at; www.mdkiss.org

  • Indoor Air Quality Testing -

When and how to perform Indoor Air Quality Testing can be a difficult decision to make. Attached is a report provided by the Connecticut Department of Health, that outlines and defines some of the issues;
"Indoor Air Quality Testing Should Not Be The First Move"

  • Use of Indoor Pools during Electrical Storms -

Do you have a policy addressing the use of indoor pools during electrical storms? Historically, this has dealt primarily with outdoor pools, where the sight, sound, or even the approach of a storm can be enough to close a pool and require all occupants to clear the deck. More recently, this practice has been applied to indoor pools as well. Please refer the the following link as a resource in dealing with this exposure: http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/wcm/resources/indoor_pools.pdf

  • It is Flu Season!

With the increased attention on the availability of flu vaccinations, and the recent concerns over avian flu, one of the most important things our communities can do is to emphasize proper personal hygiene, early detection, reporting, and treatment. You can gain a wealth of knowledge by visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)web site. It is the best source for keeping abreast of current information and dealing with any influenza outbreak. Please visit the CDC site to be better educated and obtain awareness information to share: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/whatsnew.htm

Flu specific posters for children can be downloaded at: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/flugallery/posters.htm#kidsrisk

Here is a very good information sheet for schools from the Department of Health and Human Services on the flu as we know it today:
