MABE's orientation session for both adult and student board members gives a broad overview of the various roles, background knowledge, and skills required of new members. Orientation is held just prior to the start of the Annual Conference.

- Roles and Responsibilities
- The Legal Role
- Policy Issues
- Budget Issues
- Becoming a Better Board Member
- Dialogue with the State Superintendent
In addition to the 1 1/2 day orientation, members are entitled to priority registration, free of charge, at two Boardsmanship Academy sessions, offered at the MABE offices.
