MABE provides expert assistance to local boards who are searching for new superintendents. The goal is to provide high quality services at a reasonable cost. A presentation on the search process itself is available to boards who are getting ready to conduct a seach. In addition, MABE has a corps of trained search consultants led by Bea Gordon that is available to work with individual boards on a fee-for-service basis.

Maryland Superintendent License Information
From the Code of Maryland Regulations
13A.12.04.03.03 Superintendents.
The requirements for certification as a superintendent, deputy superintendent, associate superintendent, assistant superintendent or equivalent position are that the applicant shall:
A. Meet the requirements for certification in early childhood education, elementary education or a secondary education area;
B. Have a master's degree from an accredited institution;
C. Have 3 years of successful teaching experience and 2 years of administrative or supervisory experience; and
D. Have successfully completed a 2-year program with graduate courses in administration and supervision in an institution or institutions approved by an accrediting agency recognized by the State Superintendent of Schools. Graduate work under §B may be applied toward the requirements of this section, provided that a minimum of 60 semester hours of graduate work is presented.

Pre K-12 District -- 73,992 Students
The ideal candidate will be:
A visionary who is passionate about public education; holds student achievement as the top priority; and makes decisions based on the best interests of the children of Anne Arundel County;
An open and inclusive communicator who values input from all stakeholders; is visible and active in the schools and community; and is effective building strong relationships with and among the board, staff, students, and community;
A skilled educator who understands curriculum development, instruction, and assessment; can accept and build on current successes; is experienced meeting the requirements of NCLB and current educational trends; and has been successful addressing the needs of diverse student populations and closing the achievement gap;
An excellent manager with strong administrative, budget and financial experience and growth and facilities management who respects all staff and can support and motivate employees; and is an effective negotiator with excellent collective bargaining skills;
A politically savvy advocate who can work effectively with state and local officials; understands state funding; is not afraid to make changes to benefit the system; and is able to build support for Anne Arundel County Public Schools;
An ethical leader who holds high standards of integrity, honesty, compassion, courage, and flexibility and expects those traits in staff and students.
Must hold or qualify for Maryland superintendent license and have a minimum of 3-5 years experience in a senior administrative position.

Dorchester County
Pre K-12 District -- 4,788 Students
The ideal candidate will be:
A visionary who will include stakeholders in the development and implementation of a focused strategic plan, in which all children learn at high levels;
A proven instructional leader with a thorough understanding of curriculum development and delivery; who is able to analyze data and implement needed instructional changes that will ensure a rigorous instructional program for all children; has success addressing NCLB; and can create a positive climate throughout the school system;
A decisive administrator who has system-wide experience with budget, finance, technology, and school construction; is successful working with and supporting central and school based staff; and has collective bargaining experience:
A consensus builder who works with and balances the needs of diverse groups; involves all segments of the community; has excellent communication skills and can foster trust in the system;
An experienced advocate who is passionate about public education, possesses excellent political skills, and builds positive working relationships with local government, the board, staff and the community;
The preferred candidate will have knowledge of the Maryland education system, law, funding, and curriculum and assessment; and will become an active member of the Dorchester County community.
Candidates MUST qualify for Maryland Superintendent License. It is the responsibility of applicants to provide proof of qualifications from the Maryland State Department of Education prior to interviews.

A consensus builder with excellent oral and written communication skills who will strengthen ties with and among the Board of Education, staff, students, and all stakeholders; engender trust and respect; and be a visible, active, and committed member of Kent County schools and community;
An instructional leader with an extensive background in curriculum, instruction, and extra/co-curricular activities; experience increasing rigor for diverse student populations; and an understanding of the operation of 21 st century schools;
A politically savvy advocate who understands and values the culture of a small rural community and can work collaboratively with state and local elected officials to benefit Kent County Public Schools;
An administrator with experience in budget, finance, and the management of staff, resources, and programs who promotes accountability and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
